The industry unites for UK Coffee Week

Starbucks, AMT, Nero, Costa and Lavazza are among some of the industry’s top players taking part to raise money for the charity which works in partnership with WaterAid to provide sustainable clean drinking water projects to some of the poorest communities in African coffee-growing countries. To get the week started, on Tuesday 16 April, X-Factor finalist J’Nay aka John Adeleye played ‘secret’ gigs at some of London’s finest coffee institutions.

From May, customers will be able to collect points with catering packs carrying the Kenco Rewards Club logo by registering at www.mykenco.com/professional. Each item from the reward range has been chosen with the environment in mind, including an Eco Kettle, Jamie Oliver Recycled Glasses and Jamie Oliver Herb Pots, with more new rewards being added soon.

This announcement comes as part of the chain’s latest financial results which revealed that profits are rising. Last year's sales were up 17% from £377 million to £443 million and 36 new shops opened between 2011 and 2012.

McDonald’s becomes first restaurant chain to serve 100% Freedom Food pork from British farms

The move is McDonald’s latest step to provide consumers with locally and responsibly-sourced food on the High Street, and to continue supporting British and Irish farmers. McDonald’s will become the UK’s second biggest buyer of Freedom Food pork and all sausage and bacon on its menu, from the popular breakfast McMuffins through to the bacon in premium salads and promotional burgers, will be from Freedom Food-approved farms.

Valeria Mazza crowned winner of 2013 TUCO Barista Skills competition

Mazza beat off stiff competition in a fiercely fought contest with over 20 contestants from 16 universities, who were all aiming for the top accolade. Mazza impressed the judges with her cool calm precision and technical skill, as well as evidenced huge creativity with her signature coffee, entitled Pistachio Ice-Cream Americano.

Catering equipment associations collaborate on a range of industry projects

The Catering Equipment Suppliers Association (CESA – representing manufacturers) and the Catering Equipment Distributors Association (CEDA – representing distributors) say there is now more opportunity to work together. One example of how CESA and CEDA will come together is a sustainability project involving the British Hospitality Association (BHA) and Foodservice Consultants Society International (FCSI).
