Horsemeat scandal dents consumer confidence in food industry

Consumer trust in the food industry has dropped by a quarter (24%), with 30% now buying less processed meat and a quarter (24%) buying fewer ready meals with meat in or choosing vegetarian options. Two thirds of people (68%) don’t think the Government has been giving enough attention to enforcing labelling laws, with half of consumers (50%) not confident ingredient information is accurate. 44% say they now look at ingredient labelling more on food containing meat, with 83% agreeing that country of origin labelling should be required on meat products.

‘KIMCHEE to go’, named after its flagship restaurant on High Holborn, will open a 1,951 sq ft site on the Strand on the 2nd April, closely followed on 22nd April with a 2,235 sq ft site on New Oxford Street.  Open all day, seven days a week, the affordable menu will introduce a range quick and healthy Korean dishes. All dishes will be available to eat-in or take-away with an average spend of £6 per head.

Taco Bell removes beef products as McDonald’s tests negative for horsemeat

The meat was supplied by an unnamed company in Europe and a spokesperson for Taco Bell said immediate action was taken: “We immediately withdrew it from sale, and discontinued purchase of that meat and contacted the Food Standards Agency with this information. We apologise to our customers and take this matter very seriously as food quality is our highest priority.” The news comes as fast-food giant McDonald’s confirmed its products were clear of any horse meat contamination.
