Abstract
James Goodwin of Huntington School in York has been crowned the winner of the McCain Purely Potato School Chefs' Challenge.
Goodwin's winning dish featured chargrilled turkey steak with melted blue cheese, bacon and spinach potato cakes using McCain Purely Potato and a dressed salad. The talented young chef said: "It's so easy to use. I use Purely Potato in my kitchen regularly at break and lunch time and wanted to prepare a meal that I could cook for a large number of pupils to enjoy." School chefs were asked to create recipes for lunch or break time, and follow Food Based Guidelines using McCain Purely Potato. The range is made especially for schools, they are not fried which makes them extremely versatile and helps cooks to serve food that is popular with school children. It can be used as an ingredient or a starchy carbohydrate accompaniment to any meal. Adrian Greaves, McCain Foodservice associate director, said: "McCain is truly committed to providing excellent school meals and we are delighted to support this competition. It is great to recognise the truly talented catering staff within North Yorkshire who work so hard to provide pupils and staff with delicious meals that meet current food and nutritional based guidelines." Judge Judy Hargadon, of The School Food Trust, added: "This is a great initiative and I would like to thank McCain for all its support to school caterers. It is a fantastic example of pupils, chefs, school suppliers and catering managers working together to improve the food that young people eat, and in so doing meet the Government's guidelines. "School catering teams work extremely hard every day to ensure their pupils have a selection of delicious and nutritious meals. This competition is a great opportunity for school chefs to shine, demonstrating their skills and passion for their work. I would encourage others to follow the example set by McCain and North Yorkshire County Caterers." The School Chefs' Challenge is part of ongoing work that McCain has initiated with Local Authorities across the country. It aims to help caterers in the school system serve a selection of meals which meet the Government's guidelines and are popular with children.
