Apetito hosts webinar on managing food allergies in schools
Abstract
Meals provider Apetito has launched a webinar on ‘Best Practice for Managing Food Allergies in Schools’ during Allergy Awareness Week (21-28th April), to build knowledge across school catering teams as to how they can deliver safe mealtimes for pupils.

Allergy UK states that around 5-8% of children in the UK live with a food allergy and 20% of all severe allergic reactions to food happen whilst at school, demonstrating why it’s so vital that schools are aware of how to effectively cater for and manage food allergies in schools.

This year’s Allergy Awareness Week’s campaign theme is ‘I Wish I Knew’ which focuses on raising understanding that allergies can strike at any point and that it is important to intervene immediately when allergy symptoms appear.

During the webinar, registered dietitian at Apetito Sophia Cornelius will share knowledge about food allergies, what responsibilities schools have and examine the importance of following best practice to ensure pupil safety at mealtimes.

The webinar will be useful for headteachers, bursars and catering managers as well as anyone responsible for pupil wellbeing and school food. What attendees will learn:

  • The school’s role in managing food allergies
  • How to prevent cross-contamination
  • Allergen labelling & communication tips
  • Building a safer, more inclusive school mealtime

Rupert Weber, general manager for Apetito’s education division, said: “Food allergies are something that must be taken extremely seriously and as one of the UK’s fastest growing school meal providers, we know how important it is to ensure pupils with food allergies are effectively catered for.

“We take real pride in our dedication to offering meals for children that cater to a wide range of dietary requirements including providing a range of meals free-from the 14 declarable allergens. This means schools can serve a wide range of delicious and safe meals they can trust and pupils with allergies can enjoy similar meals to their peers.

“We’re delighted to be able to provide this resource to help schools follow best practice when managing food allergies in a way that is easy and cost effective and hope it will help ensure that schools can provide meals which are safe for all pupils to enjoy.”
