From July to September 2012 like-for-like retail sales increased by 2.37%. During the same period high street sales, reported by the British Retail Consortium, grew by 0.5%, making this the ninth consecutive quarter station retail results have out outperformed the high street. Gifts performed best in stations this quarter, reporting a 30.77% increase. Food and beverage offers continued to perform strongly, with sales in specialist food catering growing by 18.5%, bread growing by 9.75% and hot food by 8.12%.

Many caterers are already familiar with the Food for Life Catering Mark and over 600,000 Catering Mark meals are being served every day in schools, hospitals, universities, nurseries and staff restaurants. To help them meet the requirements of the Catering Mark standards, caterers need suppliers who can deliver products that can satisfy a variety of accreditations required at the bronze, silver and gold levels of the Catering Mark.

The newly accredited BTEC Level 2 Intermediate and Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships - Foundation Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship in Wales -  in Craft Cuisine, which were launched on November 28, have been exclusively designed and developed by Pearson Work Based Learning in association with the Applied Ability Awards (AAA) National Committee. For the first time, learners can now combine the AAA assessment with a full Apprenticeship programme and have their practical skills independently endorsed by senior professional chefs.

The skills organisation is supporting employers from the industry it represents to develop a submission to the Employer Ownership Fund (EOF), which offers employers in England the funds they need to design and deliver their own training solutions.
