The research, carried out by Chinese technology company Huawei and based on 800,000 images of food and drink, saw eggs edge out cake and chicken in the top 10.
While the UK-wide results matched the tastes of Londoners, Instagramers in Birmingham were more inclined to post and share food photos on the sweeter side as cake and chocolate proved most popular in the Midlands.
Further north in Manchester, cocktails were the most commonly snapped food or drink.
Across Europe, coffee was the most popular shared drink while beers and ales featured in the majority of top 10s (six out of ten countries).
The growing trend of consumers sharing their food whilst dining out was highlighted in a recent report from Carlsberg which said that ‘shareable moments’ were now vital for operators in the age of social media.
