Abstract
Obesity is the biggest threat to women’s health and can affect the outcomes of pregnancies as well as impacting the health of future children, according to the annual report from chief medical officer, Sally Davies.
The report, entitled ‘The Health of the 51%: Women’, recommends that the Government includes obesity in its national risk planning and also encourages a greater degree of personal responsibility.
It states that reducing obesity in women has the potential to lower the chances that their children will be obese.
The effects of maternal obesity for the mother include decreased fertility and an increased risk of gestational diabetes, whilst the offspring could suffer from an increased risk of obesity, diabetes and hypertension.
The proportion of overweight or obese women in England in the 25-34 category is 50%, which drops to 36% in the 16-24 category.
