Abstract
New research suggests that Britons are favouring a night on the sofa with a takeaway, than a night on the town.

The research from VoucherCodes.co.uk shows 80% are choosing to stay at home, with the perfect winter night consisting of a takeaway, a drink in hand, a spot of retail therapy and Strictly Come Dancing.

The average spend on a Saturday night-in totaled £35, splurging on wine, pizza and snacks, while Brits can be looking to spend almost the same amount on dining out, but the costs can quickly add up if a taxi or parking space is needed.

Anita Naik, Lifestyle Editor of VoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “With colder nights approaching and reality TV at its best, it’s understandable that the nation is swapping nights out for cosy Saturday nights in front of the fire”

28% of those surveyed revealed that they stayed in to replenish their bank balances, while almost 10% were swayed by Saturday night television.

Women are leading the trend of spending a Saturday night at home, with 87% confessing they’re planning to stay in more often, and a third of women are doing so to avoid missing out on their favourite Saturday night TV.

Almost half of Brits also admitted to spending on average up to £125 a time on shopping for Christmas presents, new clothes and even holidays while they relax in front of the TV.

Naik said: “Our ‘always on’ mobile culture is clearly impacting our spending habits, with nearly half of the UK online shopping while watching TV and spending nearly as much as they would on a night out.

“The sofa is quickly becoming the new high street for us Brits as we’re increasingly shopping for clothes, groceries, Christmas presents and even holidays while getting our latest reality TV fix.”

OnePoll carried out the survey of 2,000 adults during 26th-30th September 2014.
