Worcestershire ready for healthy schools stage

15th Oct 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
Worcestershire schools are preparing to be introduced to the new Healthy School Enhancement model after succeeding in supporting 80% of county schools to achieve Healthy Schools status – six months ahead of the national target.
The Enhancement model is the next stage of the programme, which is a Government flagship scheme now celebrating its tenth anniversary. The new model will begin work to achieve this next stage from November 11. The programme teaches children about every aspect of being healthy, including being active, healthy eating, emotional health and well-being and learning about healthy choices when it comes to relationships, sexual health, drugs and alcohol. Parents are encouraged to have a say and get involved in these healthy school activities and also to take these messages home. Angela Kirton, Worcestershire County Council's healthy lifestyles manager, said: "I am really pleased that Worcestershire schools have embraced the Healthy Schools programme and contributed to its success in Worcestershire. It is well-established that healthier children and young people do better in learning and in life." Cllr Liz Eyre, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for young people (12 to 19 years), added: "Our 80 per cent achievement is excellent but here in Worcestershire we want to go that one step further. The enhanced programme which looks at health in its widest sense has the potential to impact the future lifestyles of our young people and make an impact both in school and at home."
