Abstract
Sarah Male, of Perry's Restaurant in Weymouth, scooped the Young Seafood Chef competition earlier this month at the first ever Dorset Seafood Festival.
The 20-year old chef's winning dish featured Grilled Fillet of Turbot on a bed of Samphire Grass with a White Wine Shellfish Cream Sauce. Other key events that took place at the two-day event included fishtucker trials, fish filleting demonstrations and cookery demonstrations hosted by chefs Mark Hix, Mitch Tonks and Tom Cull. Roger Dalton, Committee Chairman, commented on the kind of people the event attracted: "The festival attracted around 40,000 visitors, who enjoyed paella, seafood pasta, fishcakes, mussels, scallops and much more." The event, which took place from 12-13 July, was organised by a committee led by the Harbour Traders Association, with support from Seafish, Weymouth College and the Dorset Coast Forum. Sponsorship for the festival was provided by Brewers Quay, Villa Maria New Zealand Wine and Seafish South West. Next year's event is set to provisionally kick off on 11-12 July.
