Abstract
The 2010 annual University of Cambridge Culinary Competition, which is searching for the best Cambridge College chef and waiter, promises to be closely contested this year.
A total of 14 different colleges are taking part, with 65 chefs putting their skills to the test. The biggest team is from Emmanuel College with 12 entrants. Twelve chefs will compete in the Live Competition 'cook off' on Tuesday 26th October at Cambridge Regional College when they will be required to produce a two course meal for two against the clock, in just 90 minutes. The second part of the competition will be held at the Cambridge Guildhall on Thursday 4th November, which is open to the public from 12 noon until 4pm. On the same day, eight front of house staff will be demonstrating their table laying & waiting skills and competing for the best table decorations with a Christmas theme and the winners of the live competition class will be announced. Judging will be chaired by Peter Griffiths MBE, director of Le Salon Culinaire International de Londres, who will lead a team of industry experts. Prizes for the eight food presentation classes will be presented at an awards ceremony held at Christ's College on 18th November, together with awards for best in show and best newcomer. Judith Sloane from Conference Cambridge, which is involved in organising the competition, said: "We are delighted with the response to this year's Contest and to see some new Colleges entering too. This is an important event in the College calendar; it gives the Chefs and Front of House staff a platform to show what they can do and an opportunity to receive recognition for their creativity and hard work." This year, the principal sponsor for The University of Cambridge Culinary Competition is Hobart, leading suppliers of catering equipment.
