Soft drinks go sustainable

11th Jun 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
The British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA) has revealed its long-term sustainability strategy to reduce the industry's impact on the environment.
The objectives focus on four areas: Climate change, waste and packaging, water and transport. Members of the BSDA aim to achieve a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from manufacturing by 2020, in comparison to 1990 levels. Ways of achieving this includes line optimisation, efficient heating and cooling technology. Other ambitions of the BSDA are to send zero manufacturing waste to landfill from 2015 and contribute to WRAP's (Waste and Resources Action Programme) objective by aiming to improve the sustainability of soft drinks packaging, and to reduce the sector's waste water volumes by 20% by 2020. The industry also hopes to cut the external impacts of transport by 20% by 2012 by introducing environmental efficiency techniques in the sector's own transport operations. Paul Moody, President and Chief Executive of Britvic plc, commented on this initiative: "This strategy highlights the importance the soft drinks industry places on its environment responsibilities and shows our commitment to building on, and further improving our environmental performance. "By working collectively as an industry, and with the support of national and local government, we believe we can make a significant and positive impact on the environment."
