The news follows a number of complaints from people who follow a plant-based diet, claiming that they continue to face “challenging situations” in public sector canteens.
‘Catering for Everyone’ will see the society “lobbying institutions on behalf (of consumers) to provide “tasty, nutritious, appropriate vegan meals on every public sector catering menu every day.”
Currently an estimated 500,000 people follow a vegan diet in the UK, and a staggering 170,000 people participated in Veganuary (people who go Vegan for the month of January) this year alone – three times as many as in 2017.
Dominika Piasecka, a spokeswoman for the Vegan Society, said to the BBC: "By public sector canteens, we (the Vegan Society) means places like hospitals, schools, prisons, universities, workplaces etc.
“Basically, anywhere where you go not out of choicem but because you have to eat.
"If there is no vegan option in places like that, it's a problem as there isn't always a good alternative."
The campaign is also encouraging Brits to contact their local council – who “wield huge influence in the provision of public sector catering” - to improve the vegan provision in their own offices, and influence procurement across the public sector: https://www.vegansociety.com/take-action/campaigns/catering-everyone/challenge-your-council.
