Three East of England school chefs competed at the Regional Final where they had 90 minutes to prepare four portions of a main course and a dessert suitable for 11-year-olds.
Grief is employed by Norse Catering and is based at West Winch Primary School in Norfolk. She will go onto compete at the SCOTY National Final with nine other regional winners and two ‘wildcard’ entries.
The winning main course dish was a chicken shawarma kebab with flatbread, Turkish slaw, summer couscous and a cool lemon dressing. Grief created a dessert of cherry yogurt mousse on a brownie base with a blackcurrant glaze, coulis and tuile biscuit.
SCOTY is the education catering sector’s ‘premier’ culinary skills competition. The National Final will take place on 5 March where the SCOTY champion will receive a £1,000 cash prize and the LACA School Chef of the Year trophy.
During the National Final the 12 school chefs will replicate the dishes presented to the judges in the semi-finals. The food cost for one main course and dessert must not exceed £1.30 and a minimum of one different McDougalls product is required in each.
The SCOTY competition aims to show parents the high quality of school meals that are present in schools today.
The last remaining two Regional Finals will be held in London (22 January) and the South East (23 January).
