New data reveals most food waste conscious region of UK
Abstract
New data by HelloFresh has revealed that Bristol, Norwich and Manchester are among the best cities leading the change in effectively addressing food waste.

Cities such as London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Southampton need to do more to tackle food waste. Food waste is a pressing issue globally with a staggering 2.5 billion tonnes, which is equivalent to over a third of all food produced being wasted annually.

HelloFresh examined the online queries relating to food waste and its associated phrases like ‘food waste bin’ and ‘food cycler’ over the past year, and then integrated this information with population estimates to calculate the total number of searches per 10,000 people in each region.

Started in 2017 by Compass Group USA, Stop Food Waste Day (26th April 2023) is now recognised globally in every corner of the world.

A spokesperson said: “Our mission at Stop Food Waste Day is to ignite change regarding the global food waste issue. We do this by drawing attention to the problem, at the same time educating through engaging with society at all levels and sharing practical, creative, and impactful ways we can all change our behaviour to minimise food waste.

“It's easy for everyone to get involved with reducing the impact of food waste, not just on Stop Food Waste Day, but day in, day out - both in our personal and professional lives.”

HelloFresh recommended the following tips to fight food waste:

  • Planning your meals in advance and just purchasing the ingredients you actually need is a great way to start
  • Make sure to store your food in optimum conditions for prolonged shelf life, taking light levels, temperature and oxygen into account
  • It’s important to understand food labelling - ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ are very different things
  • Why not try growing your own fruit and vegetables at home?
  • Batch cooking and freezing meals, not only reduces waste but saves you time in the future
