Abstract
To celebrate Valentine’s Day (14th February) we found some of our favourite food facts about the topic that we would love to share with you.
- Richard Cadbury, from the Cadbury chocolate company, invented the first heart-shaped box of chocolates in the 1860s.
- In Japan, women give men gifts such as 'honmei-choco', a homemade chocolate. Men return the gesture on 14th March giving women white chocolate and other white gifts as a sign of their affection.
- Special edition Love Heart sweet packets were launched for Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal wedding in 2011.
- In 2019, approximately £391 million was spent on Valentine's Day in the UK, with chocolates and sweets accounting for 20% of this expenditure.
- In Italy lovers exchange 'baci perugina', small, chocolate-covered hazelnuts with romantic quotes printed on their wrapper in different languages (bacio is the Italian word for kiss).
- Many fruits, including raspberries, are thought to have aphrodisiac properties making them popular ingredients in Valentine's Day dishes.
