The students won the prestigious accolade thanks to their ‘Queen Ethelburga’s Mess’ creation, a recipe which included fresh strawberries, garden mints and locally sourced eggs which met the local produce theme of the competition.
Cooking in front of a live audience, nine-year olds Lara Haigh and Jack Bennett, with the support of school caterer Sarah Middlemiss, beat of the five other competing schools to take top spot.
Middlemiss said: “I really couldn’t be prouder of the team and their achievement in the competition today. Despite being a team member down due to illness, Lara and Jack threw themselves into the competition and worked calmly and meticulously to create their winning dish.
“They developed the recipe themselves back in our school kitchen in York, and I have been overwhelmed by their commitment to this competition.”
Chapter House Preparatory School was awarded £1,000 worth of kitchen equipment for their win.
