Abstract
Kraft Foods is kicking off 2011 with its first national Philadelphia Young Chef of the Year competition.
The competition is open to all trainee chefs in full time education between the ages of 17-23 and Kraft is very keen to work with colleges to encourage as many entries as possible.
This year's national event follows Kraft's very successful 2010 challenge for first year students at Westminster Kingsway College in London, which was won by young chef Shanice Parris. She skilfully produced grilled sea bass with Philly bonbons spaghetti of spring vegetables, and a Philly prawn bisque, and was praised for the quality of her finished dish as well as her creative use of Philadelphia.
The company says once again it has teamed with the Craft Guild of Chefs, City & Guilds and chef consultant Sophie Wright to develop a competition that will stretch student chefs and reward the most promising individuals. It will also benefit the colleges.
All entrants need do is to create a starter or a main course using Philadelphia cream cheese for four covers that will take no longer than one hour to prepare and cost no more than £5.
Kraft is offering a competition pack free of charge to help drive participation by colleges, which includes five A3 posters, E-shot, PDFs for use on college intranet systems, email attachment, etc.
Students will also get a chance to attend a Philadelphia recipe demo day with Sophie Wright at a regional college venue.
The winner of the competition will receive £500 while three runners up will each receive £200. All the finalists will receive a Philadelphia chef's jacket, public acclaim, plus their recipe published online. In addition, the college of the overall winner will receive £1,000 Continental Chef Supplies vouchers to spend on equipment for the college.
Ù To take part, students simply register for the competition at www.philadelphia.co.uk/youngchef and upload their entry. Details of the competition criteria and terms and conditions can also be found online at this address. The deadline for entries is April 10 2011.
