Abstract
Minette Batters, president of the National Farmers Union, says the UK food system needs a greater focus on procurement to increase the use of local food on public sector menus. And she believes the Government has a significant role to play in making this happen.
"Rishi Sunak, before he became prime minister, said he wanted to see 50% local food as part of all procurement and Labour has made a similar pledge so there is support for the idea, but it needs resources," she says.
Minette, who runs a tenanted family farm in Wiltshire, has made campaigning about the importance of British food and farming a key driver during her term as president.
She is currently working with the Public Sector Catering Alliance to explore how schools, hospitals and prisons can put more British food on their menus.
