The new packaging has been developed by Fresh Direct’s key avocado supply partner Westfalia Fruit. It is the first time that the packaging has been used in foodservice.
The packaging replaces the current plastic packaging with a paper-based pack, which is made from actively managed, FSC approved sources, where forests are regenerated as trees are replanted and is fully recyclable.
Paul Nieduszynski, chief executive at Sysco GB, said: “This is another step in our journey to reduce our environmental impact and builds on other recent successes such as the removal of 50 tonnes of plastic from our berries packaging, helping us to continue to lead the foodservice sector.
“While the major initiatives like our electric vehicles or solar installations may grab the headlines, it’s the work like this that our teams are doing day in and day out that’s also making a real difference. Every incremental change we make with our suppliers adds to our goal of becoming a more sustainable organisation.”
The co-branded twin packs are wrapped around the avocados providing an additional layer of protection for the product ensuring that they arrive with the customer in top condition.
