Abstract
Flavoured milk brand Yazoo is the first company in the UK to introduce a bendable paper straw to its portfolio as FrieslandCampina vows to replace 100 million plastic straws with the more sustainable paper version.

The Yazoo no added sugar format is available in primary and secondary schools across the UK The flexible straw will be launched in March and unlike straight paper straws they will not fall into the carton.

Chris Gardiner, customer development manager- foodservice at FrieslandCampina said: “We’ve worked really hard to develop and launch the UK’s first bendable paper straw.

“It is made from FSC certified food safe paper that doesn’t soften too quickly when drinking, plus it’s long enough that it won’t fall into the carton before the drink is empty, making it perfect for children!”

A year ahead of the EU ban on disposable plastic straws, the dairy company is aiming to remove 57,000 kilos of plastic straws by 2021.

Patrick van Baal, global director of packaging development at FrieslandCampina, added: “Here at FrieslandCampina we are continuing to work on reducing our plastic with industry leading innovation. The new paper straw is fully degradable to minimise any impact on the environment.”
