Women more likely to eat fruit and veg than men

20th Mar 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Women opt for more fruit and vegetables than men, according to a survey conducted for Foodborne Disease Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet).
More than 14,000 adult me and women were quizzed about their eating habits, revealing that men were more likely to eat meat and poultry, especially duck, veal, and ham, as well as certain shellfish such as shrimp and oysters. However, women were more likely to eat vegetables, especially carrots, tomatoes and fruits, especially strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and apples. Women also preferred dry foods such as almonds and walnuts, and were more likely to buy eggs and yoghurts when compared with men. More research found that men were more likely to eat asparagus and Brussels sprouts than women, whereas women would buy more fresh hamburgers as opposed to the frozen kind. And more men consumed undercooked meat and eggs than women, while a higher percentage of women would eat alfalfa sprouts.
