Abstract
Westminster Kingsway College (WKC) students were chosen to provide refreshments for the Prime Minister Brown, at 10 Downing Street last week where he met with young people who represented the UK at World Skills 2007 competition.
The 15-year old students from Pimlico School and Westminster City School, who are currently studying the Young Apprenticeship in Hospitality, prepared a range of canapés, which included traditional fare such as fish and chips and modern dishes including marinated red mullet on thai scented vegetables.
This initiative aimed to demonstrate the skills of young people today and how students can develop this in College.
Gordon Brown's guests included Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, John Denham and Minister for Skills, David Lammy.
Stephen Hyde, head of division hospitality, leisure and tourism at WKC, commented: "This event has provided our younger students with a platform to showcase their skills as well as being a huge compliment to their work. This will enthuse them to continue in the industry."
Brown was impressed with the WKC chef's culinary skills when he visited the college in November last year to highlight how the Government will be raising the age of leaving compulsory education from 16 to 18.
