Abstract
The Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum (WFNF) policy conference, taking place on 1 April 2022, will examine the Government’s strategy for tackling obesity in the UK and wider policy landscape impacting obesity reduction.

It follows the announcement of measures to be implemented in April 2022 to reduce obesity rates in the UK, including the HFSS food advertising watershed, calorie labelling for the out-of-home sector, and a reform of weight management services available nationally and locally.

Areas for discussion include:

  • The Tackling Obesity 2020 strategy - potential effectiveness, and the impact of Covid-19
  • Implementation - issues and opportunities for stakeholders including the food and drink and hospitality sectors, public health bodies, individuals and households
  • Policy coordination - the strategy alongside wider public health developments, such as the Food Strategy White Paper
  • The OHID and the OHP - their role and priorities in policy initiatives for addressing obesity-related issues
  • Inequalities - access to weight management and opportunities for physical activity, public information, education and childhood obesity, and public health coordination

The policy conference will feature keynote sessions with Professor Jonathan Valabhji, national clinical director for diabetes and obesity at the NHS and Professor Paul Gately, professor of exercise and obesity at Leeds Beckett University.

The conference will also feature further contributions from Birmingham City Council, The British Sandwich and Food To Go Association as well as Charlton Manor Primary School. The event will be an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials.
