Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum to host HFSS conference
Abstract
The high fat, sugar and salt conference (HFSS) will take place in Westminster on 10 October 2019 with a focus on the on-going policy discussion, advertising regulation and priorities for the industry.

The Scientific Advisory Committee maintains the current advice that saturated fats should make up no more than 10% of dietary energy. Correlations have been found between high saturated fat and raised blood cholesterol which increases the risk of heart disease.

The HFSS conference follows the release of the government’s ‘Advancing our health’ green paper, which includes plans for front-of-pack nutritional labelling, revised salt reduction targets and a review on whether the industry has done enough to reduce sugar.

Vicki Coulton, from the department of health and social care, will discuss the next steps for high fat, sugar and salt policy in the UK.

Other speakers include Geoff Ogle the chief executive of Food Standards Scotland and Claire Pritchard the chair of London Food Board and chief executive officer at Greenwich Cooperative Development Agency.

There will be a discussion on reducing HFSS content in popular products whilst overcoming cost barriers to reformulation, including issues and options for smaller manufacturers. Also, delegates will look at the possible scope for further government intervention.

Chris Witty was appointed the new chief medical officer in June 2019 and she has been asked to review what more the Government can do to reach its target of halving child obesity by 2030.

Attendees will consider the role of broadcasters, media and the future of HFSS advertisement regulation. Further sessions will explore how local initiatives boost community awareness of HFSS.
