Abstract
In Britain chocolate cake is our overwhelming favourite, but across the Europe the cake choices are a little different, according to an analysis of website search volumes for popular cakes.

In research commissioned for online cake shop Jack and Beyond, the preferred cake in three out of ten European countries was the rich coffee classic tiramisu, which came top France, Belgium and Italy.

Second overall came cheesecake, which was named the favourite both in the Czech Republic and in Greece.

In the UK, chocolate cake was followed by cupcakes, carrot cake, cheesecake and red velvet cake. The nation’s top ten was rounded out by tiramisu, pavlova, Christmas cake, penettone and Victoria.

Researchers laid down some ground rules about what constituted a cake before starting to count up the online searches. This was their definition: ‘Cakes’ in this study are defined as any dessert which is made from cake-like recipes, is arranged and eaten as one and/or is traditionally defined as one.

Spain’s favourite turns out to be the carrot cake, eclipsing such traditional favourites as cheesecake, tiramisu and even the Spanish classic tocino de cielo (a type of crème caramel).

Other country favourites included muffins in Germany, mazurek (a flat Easter shortcake with dried fruit) in Poland and cupcakes in the Netherlands.

Although it didn’t make the country’s top ten, UK web browsers clocked up an impressive 33,100 Google searches a month for ‘hash brownies’.
