Abstract
Organisers of the TUCO (The University Caterers Organisation) conference from July 22–25 plan to offer at more than 300 caterers, suppliers and sponsors a combination of professional seminars, workshops and plenary meetings that will all focus on sustainability in every aspect of university catering.

Presentations at the University of South Wales, Treforest venue will range from how to deliver best practice in sustainable kitchens through to advice on social media for sustainable marketing.

Managing director of TUCO Ltd, Julie Barker, said: “The event will be a valuable and informative platform for university caterers and suppliers and help them understand the crucial difference they can make by embracing sustainability.

“Environmental issues have long been top of the agenda politically and socially, and today it is widely accepted that sustainability makes good business sense.

“University caterers have a balancing act to manage in terms of achieving value and quality for students, whilst also considering their environmental impact of their work, and I am certain these informative and inspiring sessions will provide practical ideas and advice to help them achieve this even more effectively.”

Keynote speakers include Jane Davidson, former minister for the environment and sustainability in Wales, who will address how best to embed sustainability in the student experience, Charles Secrett, former head of Friends of the Earth England, who will outline global sustainability challenges and solutions, and Rich Neumann of US membership body the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS), will give an overview of its benchmarking survey.

A representative from the Waste Reduction Awards Programme (WRAP) will outline its Hospitality and Food Service Agreement, which is designed to assist the sector in recycling more and reducing waste, while Rob Rees, the ‘Cotswold Chef’, will explain the role of food and a corporate responsibility in improving all aspects of life.

Also on the agenda are marketing expert Del Jones of Branching Out Europe, who will provide insight into social media, plus representatives of the Marine Stewardship Council, the Soil Association and Compassion in World Farming.

Sponsors of the TUCO event include 3663, Brakes, Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, Heineken, Tchibo, Peros, Matthew Clarke and Santa Maria.
