Abstract
UKHospitality has responded to the London Mayor’s draft London Food Strategy offering a chance to engage with the challenges the hospitality sector faces.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has released a draft London Food Strategy outlining his plan for every Londoner to have access to healthy, affordable, and culturally-appropriate food regardless of their postcode or income.

UKHospitality is the voice for over 700 companies and 65 000 venues in the sector that employs 2.9 million. The trade body aims to develop a case on how to unlock the industry’s full potential and ensure the needs of the sector are effectively represented.

Chief Executive of UKHospitality, Kate Nicholls said: “we are happy to respond to the Mayor’s consultation on a Food Strategy, and encouraged to see the Mayor’s Office is engaging with employers and seeking input from the sector. Businesses in the sector are already working hard to achieve some of the Mayor’s aims, by reducing the calorie content of their menus through reformulation and by providing even greater choice.”

Not only is ensuring that food is of a high quality but also ensuring the industry has the right tools to progress. Nicholls stated: “Engagement with the sector is going to be crucial, particularly if we are going to secure a favourable tourism sector deal and prioritise training and employment in hospitality. The capital boasts some world-renowned restaurants and food concepts and a supportive Mayor’s Office can ensure that this remains.”
