Abstract
One of the country’s most renowned innkeepers – on TV - is proudly standing up for the nation’s favourite food and bringing a cheer to British Sausage Week 2012.

British comedy star Al Murray, the Pub Landlord, will front the seven-day sausage celebration from November 5th. The vociferous character will draw attention to the fantastic range of quality assured sausages and the fact that bangers remain a stand up star of menus.

“It’s a huge honour to be the King of Sausages for 2012. The British banger is a true national treasure and I can’t wait to taste some of the best our country has to offer. I’m calling on people right across the UK to celebrate the Week while tucking into their favourites.”

“I’m sure we’ll hear a few sausage jokes along the way but there is a serious side to the Week. Pig farmers are losing money due to rocketing feed costs and many face the prospect of going out of business.

“Sourcing sausages that carry the Red Tractor logo or equivalent mark of assurance will support farmers and at the same time provide customers with confidence that their sausage dishes are from pigs produced to strict welfare standards.”

BPEX foodservice trade manager, Tony Goodger, said: “We’re delighted to have Al join us in Standing Up for British Bangers, an apt theme for 2012. Now celebrating its 15th anniversary, British Sausage Week is an opportunity to toast great varieties and innovative dishes.”

“To help pubs and other outlets get involved, we have created eye-catching point-of-sale material, including posters, balloons and stickers, as well as a fun Stand up for the British Banger Quiz. Just call 02476 478809 or email tony.goodger@bpex.ahdb.org.uk.”
