Well-Fed eliminates ultra-processed food from meals
Abstract
Well-Fed, a socially conscious meal manufacturer based in North Wales, is leading the way when it comes to improving people’s health by removing ultra-processed Foods (UPF) from its meals.

The meal manufacturer provides affordable meals and everyday staples to thousands of households across North Wales and the North-West of England through its Meals on Wheels, school catering and mobile shop services. Well-fed says it is the first company in Europe to eliminate ultra-processed foods from its meals.

Ultra-processed foods such as breakfast cereals, processed meats, carbonated drinks and mass-produced bread, typically contain five or more preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial colours and flavours – all of which cause long-term damage to our health.

Research reveals that around 60% of calories consumed in the UK come from ultra-processed foods, with the surge in these numbers linked to hidden ingredients added to products to prolong their shelf life and improve their appearance.

Niki Keegan, business development manager at Well-Fed, commented: “As a good food manufacturer we are proud to be the first company in Europe to go UPF free. Our aim is that regardless of income and ability, people can embrace wholesome eating and effortless cooking, making mealtimes happier and healthier for everyone.

“Moving to UPF-free meals across everything in our range took us nine months of research & development and hard work to achieve. Being the first company to do something is not easy – it has taken us months to confirm and agree ingredients with Open Food Facts, scientists and nutritionists. But we hope our experience can help other food businesses now, and demonstrate that this change is not just possible, but essential and urgent.”
