Toby Carvery launches healthy food campaign for kids

25th Mar 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
As part of the Government's Year of Food and Farming, the Toby Carvery pub and restaurant group has launched a campaign aimed at teaching school children about the food they eat and where it comes from.
Children are being given the opportunity to meet professional chefs at Carvery chains up and down the country. Chefs are teaching kids about where food comes from and how it is prepared before it reaches the plate. The first session kicked off earlier this month when students from Brownhills West Primary School in Norton Canes were invited to their local Toby Carvery in Cannock to discover more about the journey vegetables make from the farm to their fork, including where and how different vegetables grow. During the two-hour session, students also learned about the importance of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, the nutritional content of vegetables, the different ways to cook them, and went on to sample different vegetables before tucking into a traditional carvery meal. Sheelagh Pegg of Toby Carvery, commented: "As an official partner in the government's Year of Food and Farming initiative, we are committed to encouraging children to eat a healthier diet. A traditional roast meal is a simple, tasty way of incorporating those all-important five portions of vegetables, which is why we serve a selection of eight vegetables every day." Chef schools are now being rolled out to Toby Carvery restaurants across the country. www.tobyfoodandfarming.co.uk
