With recent figures showing that childhood obesity in England has reached a ‘record high’, Heart Research UK has generated some tips to keep Halloween healthy.
Keep it playful
You’re never too young or old to participate in some apple bobbing. Why not mix it up with some other fruit or vegetables, like strawberries and cucumbers.
Fright night food
Make a heart-healthy meal by halving peppers and filling with vegetable rice, pulses or couscous. You can make eyes out of raisins and teeth out of sweetcorn for an extra special scary surprise.
Trick or treat
Challenge those who dare to pull a plastic spider out of a bowl of tinned ghostly gooseberries, or you can use a food colouring pen to draw vein on lychees drained from a tin – they’ll look like eyeballs but taste delicious.
Waste not, want not
If you think pumpkins are only good for carving, you’re in for a fright. Instead of throwing the insides away, use them to make a pumpkin soup full of vitamins, minerals and fibre.
