Teaching children food hygiene deemed a success

12th Oct 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published an evaluation report of FSA Mission: Possible!, a UK-wide pilot scheme aimed at teaching food hygiene messages to children aged eight to 10 (key stage 2).
The report concludes that the pilot was a great success. The scheme's secret agent concept captured pupils' imaginations and allowed them to develop a range of skills that c uld be applied to the wider curriculum, such as carrying out scientific investigation. FSA Mission: Possible! has proved to be a valuable resource, which is popular with children, their parents and teachers, and local authorities. With the pilot stage now complete, the FSA is considering options for the future development of the project. The long-term development of FSA Mission: Possible! will depend on how well it can be integrated into the school science curriculum. Based on a 'secret agent' theme, FSA Mission: Possible! provides a series of fun and interactive tasks, that take place in both the classroom and at home. It provides important food safety and hygiene messages to school children, and their families, based on the '4Cs' of food hygiene – cooking, chilling, cleaning and cross-contamination. FSA Mission: Possible! was originally developed by Wyre Borough Council with the support of funding from the FSA grant scheme. A nationwide pilot of the scheme was conducted from March 2007 to October 2008.
