Abstract
The on-going heatwave in the UK has seen one Kent-based ice cream maker’s sales rocket – currently up 10% compared to the same period last year.

Claiming the weather will “always create an uplift in sales in this particular sector,” Simply Ice Cream supplies its 30-odd varieties to independents, delis, farm shops and supermarkets (including Waitrose and Co-op) across Kent and the South East.

Managing director Sally Newall commented: “We’ve been flat out. It’s always busy this time of year with so many shows, but we’ve sold out at every one.

“We continue to pick up a number of new customers on a weekly basis as the demand for cooling treats increases with no sign of the heatwave abating.”

In a bid to unveil the region’s ice cream eating habits, Simply Ice Cream ran a short survey among several hundred people.

Key findings include:

  • Honeycomb is the most popular flavour with a 36% majority
  • Salted caramel came in second place followed by vanilla (third)
  • Retirees eat ice cream the most – 38% ‘several times a week’
  • In comparison, 71% of mums and dads said they only eat it on ‘a special day out’
  • 89% of students agreed they ‘need no excuse to eat ice cream’

What’s more, it also found that the most popular place to eat the sweet treat is on the beach – followed by on a special day out or served with pudding in a restaurant or dinner party.

Kent inhabitants also enjoy eating it at home straight out of the tub – as do Londoners, many of whom have never decanted it into a bowl to eat!
