Survey shows most catering professionals still expect a pay rise over next year

A survey of workers has revealed that revealed that the majority (57.1%) of catering professionals still expect to receive a pay rise from their employer in the next 12 months, despite the country going into a recession as a result of Covid-19.

Independent job board, CV-Library, surveyed 1,100 UK professionals, to understand their perceptions of where their career will head over the next year.

However, CV-Library's job market data reveals that they may be in for a disappointment if they’re expecting a pay rise, as industry salaries dropped in July, by 5.3% month-on-month, and 6.1% year-on-year.

In addition to this, the survey shows that only 14.3% believe they’ll be offered a promotion during this time.

Lee Biggins, founder and chief executive CV-Library, said: “It’s understandable that catering professionals are looking to regain some of their lost income in the coming months, particularly if they’ve been placed on furlough.

“Indeed, with social distancing restrictions in place, many businesses in the sector may struggle to make ends meet and be unable to offer an increase in pay or career progression.

“If you’re unable to offer pay rises in the coming year, but want to retain staff, it’s important that you do what you can to make your employees feel valued in another way.

“This can be done by offering better training opportunities, initiating a reward system for hard work or by promoting a supportive company culture.”

The findings also showed that, among catering workers surveyed who are currently unemployed, 51% said they were confident that they would secure a new role in the next three months.

Biggins added: “The data clearly shows that catering workers still have a great deal of confidence in the job market.

“While we are seeing an increase in the number of job opportunities available, job seekers may find that it takes longer than expected to find the perfect role.

“However, if you’re looking to hire, it’s imperative that you streamline your recruitment process and advertise your new roles effectively in order to attract new talent.”
