Abstract
With two bank holiday weekends in May and June, burger restaurant Fat Hippo has surveyed 2,000 Brits to reveal the UK’s favourite hangover meal.
According to the survey 30% of the UK would choose a full English breakfast, which consists of a number of foods including bacon, eggs, British sausage, baked beans, fried tomato, fried mushrooms, black pudding and toast.
The second most popular is pizza with 10% of the UK choosing it for their go-to hangover meal, followed closely by burgers in third at 8% and fish and chips at 7%.
However the top foods to cure hangovers include:
- Eggs: are rich in cysteine, an amino acid that your body uses to produce the antioxidant, glutathione. Glutathione helps with breaking down the toxic by-products of alcohol metabolism, which may reduce hangover symptoms.
- Watermelon: with headaches being a hangover symptom – often due to dehydration and decreased blood flow to the brain – eating watermelon may help because it is rich in L-citrulline, a nutrient that may increase blood flow.
- Pickles: are high in sodium, an electrolyte that is used up during excessive drinking. Eating pickles or drinking their brine may help boost your sodium levels and overcome your hangover.
- Honey: has a high fructose content which may improve hangover symptoms because a study of 50 adults found that honey increased the rate of alcohol elimination by up to 32.4%.
Dickie Nelson, executive chef at Fat Hippo, said: “There’s no better way to cure a hangover by eating your favourite foods. There are some weird and wacky food combinations that people have to treat their hangover, but you can’t quite beat a juicy burger.”
