The study, conducted by Foodhub, aimed to discover the nation’s favourite sandwich with one in five Brits opting for a bacon butty as their preferred option. Last year the bacon butty was controversially knocked off top spot by the hamburger causing an outcry on social media where people insisted a burger shouldn’t qualify as a sandwich.
Over a quarter of participants chose white sliced loaf as their bread of choice when it came to sandwich making, with the French favourite baguette in second (26%) and wholegrain bread coming in third (22%). Mayonnaise (48%) was crowned the UK’s go-to condiment, knocking butter (24%) off top spot.
One in five Brits claim to eat a sandwich every single day and a one in ten Londoners said they eat sandwiches several times a day.
Ardian Mula, Foodhub spokesperson said: “We all know Britain loves bacon, so it was no surprise to see it come out as the nation’s favourite sandwich. However, we were surprised to see cheese and pickle creep into the top three. It was also an eye-opener to see that mayonnaise is the UK’s favourite sandwich condiment ahead of butter.”
One in five 55–64-year-olds chose egg mayo as their preferred filling compared to just 10% of 18–24-year-olds, as the younger age group prefer the classic ham and cheese.
