Survey highlights what consumers want from takeaway packaging
Abstract
Research published by Takeaway Packaging found 49% of respondents considered the environmental impact of the food packaging every time when ordering a takeaway while another 25% considered it occasionally.

The consumer insight survey was conducted on men and women between the ages of 18 and 99-year-old as researchers say that ‘everyone loves a takeaway’.

The survey shows that consumers are interested in sustainable packaging solutions, but this interest is actually fuelled by practical motives linked to the quality and functionality of packaging.

Results from this survey show that there is a very strong consumer preference for environmentally friendly packaging material. According to the survey 44% of respondents preferred both recycled and compostable materials, 23% preferred exclusively recycled packaging and 12% preferred compostable only.

Adam Middleton, chief operating officer at Takeaway Packaging, said: “We went out to the public to discover how they felt about their local takeaway's packaging, we found that consumers are voting for the environmentally friendly options with their wallet.”

Takeaway Packaging has come up with three key recommendations for food and takeaway providers:

  • Offer a mix of compostable and recycled food packaging materials to cater to diverse consumer preferences.
  • Prioritise clear education about disposal methods for maximising the effectiveness of eco-friendly packaging.
  • Keep costs competitive but highlight the value of eco-friendly practices by clearly communicating the environmental and personal benefits to consumers.
