Survey discovers why Gen Z dislike Christmas pudding
Abstract
Recent data commissioned by the Royal Mint revealed that six in ten Brits feel that Christmas pudding isn’t a vital part of their Christmas Day table.

Google Trends research shows that over the years, searches for ‘Christmas pudding recipes’ have declined with the highest search volume last recorded in 2013.

Nick Drewe, trends expert at the online discount platform Wethrift, says this is due to four key reasons including:

  • Changing traditions: There is a greater emphasis on creating personalised experiences over traditional practices that some may consider outdated.
  • Dietary preferences: Studies show that Gen-Z is more health-conscious, with a growing emphasis on vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free foods.
  • Taste: Christmas Pudding is a steamed dessert with a dense, stodgy texture.
  • Rising sobriety: Christmas pudding is often preserved with alcohol and flambéed before serving, which can deter younger generations.

Despite this cultural shift and increased focus on health, Gen-Z still loves dessert. According to a USA study on Gen-Z’s attitude toward desserts by Hershey’s, three out of four respondents believe that special occasions like Christmas call for dessert.

Drewe says traditional Christmas pudding studded with dried fruits and spices might not appeal to younger tastes. Instead he says opt for a simpler cake recipe, create individual servings and remove certain ingredients that have lost popularity.

A Wethrift spokesperson added: “Christmas pudding remains cherished by some for its nostalgic and cultural value. By making it lighter and adapting it to broader tastes, you can create a dessert that’s both delicious and Gen-Z friendly. The key is to make it feel fresh, fun, and suited to contemporary tastes, without losing its festive essence.”
