Abstract
An air and surface steriliser from UK manufacturer Mechline Developments, is seen as ‘an important ally in the fight against coronavirus’, according to marketing manager Kristian Roberts, who has reported a surge in orders from foodservice and hospitality operators.

He said that HyGenikx had proven to eradicate harmful bacteria and viruses, including those in the same family as the latest Covid-19 pandemic.

“Despite the massive impact of coronavirus on the foodservice and hospitality sector, many businesses have diversified by offering deliveries and so infection control and food safety has never been more important.

“While coronavirus is understandably dominating the news, operators also need to protect against other dangerous microorganisms that can multiply very quickly, spreading infections compromising hygiene standards, causing food to spoil and creating offensive odours.

“HyGenikx complements operators’ existing hygiene and HACCP procedures, combating airborne viruses and bacteria, stopping their spread and minimising the risks of cross contamination.”

He said the machine - a compact wall-mounted unit that is simply plugged in - has been backed by microbiologist Dr David Webber.

Dr Webber said: “HyGenikx units have been shown to kill a wide range of microbes that are more difficult to eradicate than viruses.

“The use of similar technology in call centres and offices at an NHS Trust has been shown to reduce the incidence of illness-related absences; particularly reported cases of colds, coughs and influenza, as well as reducing other chest and respiratory problems.”

He added that without testing the HyGenikx unot against SARS-CoV-2 or a suitable surrogate he could not categorically state it could kill the current coronavirus.
