Students ‘knead’ baking and business skills for career in food, experts advise

According to The School of Artisan Food, baking skills are no longer enough for students to carve a successful career in the food industry – they need the business skills, too.

Thanks to shows such as the Great British Bake Off, professional bakery has become increasingly popular of late although the industry still claims that it is struggling to find a fresh stream of talent.

To prepare future star bakers, The School of Artisan Food – the only institution dedicated to artisan food and production in the country - is launching the UK’s only FDQ-accredited Advanced Diploma in Baking this September. There will be an open day taking place on 11th August at the School’s state-of-the-art facilities in Nottinghamshire.

The day will include a guided tour as well as the chance for future students to meet tutors and find out more information about the 10-month course, which combines vocational training with academic study.

Learning practical skills such as bread baking, long fermentation, patisserie and viennoiserie, the diploma will also provide tuition from experts including Wayne Caddy and Mickael Jahan, as well as a detailed understanding of how to bake iconic British, European and International products and contemporary breads and pastries.

Qualifications from The School of Artisan Food are well-respected throughout the UK and Europe, with HRH The Prince of Wales commenting: “What is going on here at the School is of enormous importance”.

The Advanced Diploma in Baking is suitable for those progressing from ŒA Levels or a College Diploma, anybody wanting a career change, or bakers following a lifelong passion. Applications are open to people of all ages and backgrounds, and entry requirements are flexible if candidates show a commitment to succeed or have relevant skills and experience.
