Sourcing local food tops new food survey

15th Jan 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Nearly two thirds of all UK adults believe that it is more important to source food locally than eating organic, a new food survey has found.
The survey, conducted by a GfK NOP poll for Westfield London, the retail and leisure destination which is set to open this Christmas, found that over half of all adults in the UK are not concerned if their food is organic. Londoners are the most aware, with 55% committed to more organic food next year. Rachel Belam, leasing executive at Westfield London, said: "The emphasis on local sourcing and lack of apparent interest in organic produce across most of the UK is surprising. "The different attitudes from Londoners showing a desire for ingredients that are both organic and locally sourced will present the restaurants opening at Westfield London with an exciting opportunity to appeal to both needs." Other key findings of the survey on UK eating habits reveal that 36% eat out more often now than they did five years ago. 5% of those living in the Greater London area eat out every day and 16% do so twice a week. And 64% of those who eat out prefer to go back to the their favourite restaurant rather than trying out new places.
