Soil Association calls on political parties to adopt five key manifesto points
Abstract
The Soil Association has urged the political parties to adopt five key policy asks in their manifesto’s ahead of the upcoming general election that is scheduled to take place on Thursday 4th July 2024.

The five key points include growing green jobs by supporting sustainable British farming and horticulture, protect the NHS by feeding people with healthy and sustainable food, restoring nature to ‘transform’ farmland and save wildlife, end the reliance on expensive fossil-fuel based and river-polluting nitrogen fertilisers as well as fairer food prices for both shoppers and farmers.

The Soil Association believes the NHS can be protected by:

  • Tackling the diet-related public health crisis by ensuring healthy and sustainable diets are accessible and affordable for everyone
  • Helping people eat ‘more and better’ plants and ‘less but better’ meat
  • Cutting ultra-processed food consumption – particularly for children
  • Ensuring at least half of food in schools and hospitals is British, local, and sustainable
  • Expanding free school meals to all primary schoolchildren in England
  • Investing in food and farming education and adopting a 'whole school approach' so that children adopt healthy, sustainable eating habits from an early age
