Abstract
Rob Lawton and Andy Willcox, who both work for Sodexo at Cheadle Hulme School in Cheshire, will soon be taking on a 930 mile journey on bicycles from Lands' End to John O'Groats in aid of The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Sodexo Foundation's STOP Hunger campaign.
The pair will cycle over 140 miles a day to complete the challenge in just seven days. They will begin their journey from Lands' End on Sunday 10 April, finishing in John O'Groats on Saturday 16 April.
Lawton, a catering manager from Bebington on the Wirral, and Willcox, a head chef from Flixton, Manchester, originally set a fundraising target of £2,000 but they have already had a great response and have more than doubled their total which currently stands at £5,000. They plan to split the amount they raise equally between the two charities.
They will also be supporting the Sodexo Foundation's STOP Hunger campaign, which aims to tackle poor nutrition in local communities across the UK. The campaign was launched in 2005 to support a number of charities involved in educating people on healthy eating and healthy lifestyles, providing healthy food to those in need, supporting those who teach basic life skills, such as cooking on a budget, and basic food hygiene.
Their friend and colleague Robbie Davies, Sodexo catering manager at Merchant Taylors' School in Crosby, Merseyside, will be providing support meanwhile Cheadle Hulme School has even given them the school mini bus to use as the support vehicle which will carry bike repairs, luggage and food.
Lawton said: "We realise that this will be both a physical and mental challenge and with the added pressure that this route is normally undertaken in ten days and not the seven that we are attempting. "But we are excited and only time will tell if our training has been sufficient. We are pretty determined people and the thought of the good causes that we are supporting will keep us motivated when we are feeling tired.
"Cheadle Hulme School has been fantastic in its support of the event with so much interest from the pupils and staff. We would really like to thank Mrs Petrie, head of Year 7, and all the Year 7 pupils as they raised over £3,600 at a charity fun run – a fantastic achievement and one we are immensely grateful for."
