7th Sep 2010 - 00:00
Abstract
Brighton & Hove City Council has awarded the on-site service solutions provider Sodexo with the silver Healthy Choice Award for its healthy patient menus at Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital.
The accolade was given in recognition of the healthy food choices Sodexo are offering staff and patients at the hospital. The award is designed to assist companies in helping customers to make healthy food choices and recognise compliance with nationwide standards that are set to promote healthy eating. Scoring the silver award is evidence that at least 50% of the menu items at Nuffield health Brighton Hospital are approved "healthy choice" options. In order to meet eligibility criteria, certain standards had to be met including the provision of menu options with lower levels off salt, sugar and fat content. Both the hospital and Sodexo were also ordered to prove their compliance with food hygiene legislation. To meet the required entry criteria, Sodexo provided staff training, which included training employees to recieve accreditation for The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2 food Safety Standard. And Sodexo chefs worked together with the hospital to create healthier options for its menus, making subtle changes such as offering salads without dressings and offering fresh fruit as a healthy dessert option. Lee Hopwood, Sodexo catering manager, Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital said: "We are increasingly aware of the impact that our diet has on our health, and it only makes sense that as a hospital we acknowledge this by offering balanced, nutritious and healthy meals. "We are very grateful to receive this award in recognition of the excellent work that Sodexo's chefs have done to develop healthy menu options."
