Abstract
Shopping centre, Gunwharf Quays, has partnered with food packaging manufacturer, Huhtamaki, to tackle the recycling of paper coffee cups.

It will offer shoppers an opportunity to recycle their coffee cups, with purpose-fitted bins located throughout the centre.

Colin Wilding, General Manager at Gunwharf Quays said: “Sustainability and recycling are very much close to our hearts here at Gunwharf – we have our own onsite recycling centre and we have one of largest arrays of solar panels on a shopping centre in Europe.

“We are delighted to be leading the way in the city. The partnership with Huhtamaki and Simply Cups is a fantastic way to reduce the volume of waste we produce, demonstrating our commitment to providing a sustainable shopping experience.”

The used cups will be removed from the general waste stream going to energy recovery facility and ensure they are recycled into new paper products.

Keith Crossley, General Manager at Huhtamaki Gosport added: “We are very excited to launch this scheme for Gunwharf Quays – the first of its kind in Portsmouth. We piloted the scheme in Gosport as the first in the UK with fantastic results and we are looking forward to working with Gunwharf Quays contributing towards increased recycling rates of paper cups for years to come.”

The scheme will launch on 18 October, and will be the first of its kind for both Landsec, the organisation that owns and manages Gunwharf Quays, and the City of Portsmouth.
