Shire Services celebrate success at Excellence in School Food Awards
Abstract
Shire Services triumphed at the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Excellence in School Food Awards as the Group category award winner.

The Excellence in School Food Awards celebrate ‘outstanding achievements’ in promoting healthy eating and improving school food standards across the UK.

Shropshire Council's Shire Services marketing planner, packed with 21 initiatives for schools to choose from, stood out among the competition. The planner has led to a 19% increase in meal income, improved client loyalty and led to better community engagement.

The positive feedback from schools and parents highlights the success of these initiatives in promoting healthy eating and supporting educational outcomes. Other initiatives include:

  • Curriculum Cooking Clubs: Weekly sessions for over 700 children, teaching cooking skills and promoting healthy eating.
  • Mascot Sammy Sweetcorn: Engages children in fun and healthy eating activities.
  • Gardening Clubs: Educates children on planting and harvesting, integrating various subjects.
  • Come Dine with Me: Invites parents to dine with children, showcasing meal quality and fostering community.

Dean Carroll, Shropshire Council's Cabinet Member for Housing and Assets, commented: "We are incredibly proud of our team at Shire Services for their outstanding work in promoting healthy eating among children. Winning is a testament to their dedication and innovation.

“The 19% increase in meal income and enhanced community engagement are clear indicators of their success. This recognition further motivates us to continue our efforts in making a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our community."

General manager Susan Vuli and area manager for catering Lauren Moore were also recognised as finalists in the Individuals category, each receiving a certificate for their contributions.

Susan's initiatives in fitness, wellbeing, staff development and community engagement have ‘transformed’ the work environment. Lauren's efforts in client care, meal income increase and promoting healthy eating habits among students have been equally impactful.

Sharon Hodgson, MP for Washington and Gateshead South, and the other judges were so impressed with the work of Shire Services they have been invited to speak at the next meeting of the APPG on School Food in Parliament on Thursday 13 March.

The full list of winners include:

  • Building Cleaning and Facilities Management:  Nottingham County Council
  • Catering: South Lanarkshire Council
  • Individuals Category: Chef Russ
