SciTech challenge drives sustainability for 2012 Olympics

12th Jun 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming, has launched London SciTech challenges for businesses to offer healthy and sustainable food to the visitors expected at the 2012 Games.
The challenges, created by White Loop and funded by the London Development Agency, are divided into six different areas, each championed by a different organisation. These areas are athletic performance, sport and health (champion: UK sport), Media and broadcasting (BBC), Engineering and construction (institution of civil engineers), food technology and distribution (sustain), environmental legacy (London sustainability exchange), and research and monitoring devices (national physical laboratory). Businesses respond to specific challenges with a brief outline of their idea and are then linked to the most relevant academic institution to help take their ideas forward. Entry details can be found by visiting www.scitechchallenges.com. Zeenat Anjari, from Sustain, commented: "By partnering with London SciTech Challenges, London Food Link looks forward to solving some of the technical challenges presented by the safe and sustainable supply to the 2012 Games." Henry Playfoot, co-creator from White Loop, added: "Whether it's considering how to serve healthy and sustainable fast food on a vast scale without creating mountains of packaging; developing 'wave-type' technologies which generate power from the footfall of thousands of people; or creating new prosthetic solutions inspired by the challenges faced by Paralympic athletes, London SciTech Challenges is a catalyst to help small to medium-sized businesses innovate." Other organisations championing this initiative include the BBC, UK Sport, National Physical Laboratory, and the London Sustainability Exchange.
