Cantrell was one of 30 finalists in the competition, held by the British Sandwich Association, which was held at the London Lancaster Hotel in Mayfair this week after winning through his regional final earlier in the year.
Cantrell held his nerve to wow the judging panel, which included representatives from across the sandwich industry, with his stunning Gluten Free Tofu and Soya Nut Bahn Mi, British Root Vegetables and Vietnamese Chutney.
BSA director Jim Winship commented: "The standard of competition seems to get higher every single year and it certainly took something special to catch the judges' eye this time around, however the combination of flavours and textures in Elliot's recipe, coupled with its commerciality really made it stand out from the crowd."
Cantrell is delighted to have won the coveted title of Sandwich Designer of the Year:"It is a real honour to be recognised as the best sandwich designer in the country, the standard of competition was incredible and was totally shocked when the judges announced me as the overall winner on the day."
