Abstract
New research undertaken by job board site CV-Library reveals the top five questions hospitality workers are “afraid” to ask employers.

With one in four admitting “there are certain questions they’re afraid to ask their employer,” the research found the top five to be:

  • Can I take some time off?
  • Can I work more flexible hours?
  • Can I have a pay rise?
  • Can you expand my holiday allowance?
  • Can you help me with a task?

However, of the 1,000 hospitality professionals surveyed, 60.9% agreed that they would feel happy asking these questions once comfortable with their boss, which can take between a week (43.5%), a month (26.1%), three months (17.4%) and a year (4.3%).

Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: “There’s a fine line between being too passive and too aggressive when it comes to approaching your boss about pay rises or flexible working. In an ideal workplace, an employer will create a culture where you feel comfortable enough to ask them anything, but even in these circumstances matters of money or flexible working can feel a little awkward.

“If you feel you rightly deserve that promotion or whatever it is you’re asking for (hopefully your boss will have noticed anyway!), then you should not be afraid to pose the question. However, be sure to approach the subject carefully and professionally - bowling in and demanding everything under the sun isn’t likely to be received well.

“It’s positive to see that hospitality workers don’t take too long to feel comfortable with their employer. While it may be nerve wracking asking your boss for help, flexible working or for whatever it is you need, it’s vital that you do what’s best for your career. Remember, they’re human too and they’ll understand why you’re asking these questions – just ensure you go about it in the right way.”
